The Bay Bridge

El puente más famoso de San Francisco es el Golden Gate, sin embargo, yo creo que el más importante debería de ser el Bay Bridge, uno de los puentes más transitados del país, con un tráfico diario de 270,000 vehículos.
El puente está dividido por dos (aunque en la foto sólo se ve la parte que une Oakland), y hace escala en Yerba Buena Island.
El Bay Bridge se abrió al público a finales de 1936, sólo 6 meses antes del famoso Golden Gate y lo que más alucinante me parece es que ya en esa época, tenían una visión de futuro espectacular. Pues el puente tiene dos pisos, uno de ida y otro de vuelta, con 5 carriles cada uno (es decir, un total de 10 carriles transitables).
Últimamente está muy de moda porque están construyendo uno paralelo ya que dicen que este puente no es del todo seguro, y que al ser una zona muy propensa a tener movimientos sísmicos, es probable que el día menos pensado el puente se venga abajo. Para evitar mayor desastre y teniendo en cuenta lo costoso que resultaría destrozar el puente y volverlo a hacer, decidieron que construirían uno paralelo y que probablemente quede finalizado para el próximo año. El fin de semana pasado lo cortaron para trabajar y la verdad, se nota la necesidad de tener un puente que cruce esta parte de la bahía.
Ayer estuve viendo un reportaje que decía que sin duda, va a ser el puente más caro del mundo (1,6 billones de dólares).

The most popular bridge in San Francisco has been the Golden Gate, even though I keep thinking that the most important should be the Bay Bridge, one of the busiest bridges in the United States, carrying approximately 270,000 vehicles per day.
The bridge consists of two major segments connecting a central island, Yerba Buena Island, with each shore (even the picture just show one of those parts).
The bridge was opened at the end of 1936, 6 month earlier from the popular Golden Gate and the most amazing thing is how much future view they had to build such a big construction: two floors with 5 lines each (a total of 10 lines)
In the lasts days people has been talking a lot because they are building a new one just next to the existing one. They say is not that safety against earthquakes. Actually, last weekend was closed to work for more improvements.
